Final Project Presentation

On April 20th during my presentation for my final project, I discussed my idea to develop a customisable mixed reality communication environment for individuals who do not have face-to-face interaction with one another. Presentation Slides During my research I came across an interesting project that has some elements that I would like to replicate as part of my final project. It is a Telepresence System with Room-Sized Real-Time 3D Capture and Life-Sized Tracked Display Wall by Andrew Maimone and Dr. Henry Fuchs. It utilizes 10 Kinect cameras that are used for capture and 1 for eye tracking. A paper I found relevant to my project was Kinesthetic Interaction – Revealing the Bodily Potential in Interaction Design. This paper discusses the growing interest in designing for the whole body in interaction design. The authors research Bill Buxton’s theory that today’s computer systems make extremely poor use of the potential of the human’s sensory and motor systems. After the presentation I was advised to look at the fun aspect of my project and maybe research the fun theory. Also It was brought to my attention that instead of my project being standalone application that perhaps it could be a plugin for Skype. I was also informed to look at Kinect examples and research how people interact with it. I have enough research for now on the technical aspects of the project and that I need to start researching the concept behind the idea in the first place in more detail. Scridb filter

Research areas

Recently I have been researching areas related to my project. These areas include: Online & Virtual communication Augmented reality Emigration statistics Gesture and Body based interaction. I have gathered academic resources from the college library, Google scholar, the ACM digital library, IEEE website etc. These have all provided excellent papers, articles, books and case studies. After meeting my supervisor, she was happy with my progress. She pointed out to me that I have been researching augmented reality as well as mixed reality and that I need to position myself on one or the other. After researching the both areas I believe mixed reality is where my project belongs. Mixed reality encompassing both augmented reality and augmented virtuality. Thisrefers to the merging of real and virtual worlds to produce new environments and visualisations where physical and digital objects co-exist and interact in real time. I intend to have the background of the user incorporated into the 3D environment. I was also pointed in the direction forms of communication from a HCI and CSCW point of view in the home. With these topics in mind its time to start the first draft of the initial two chapters of my Thesis. augmented Scridb filter

Setbacks

I have been researching other projects that have achieved something similar to my idea. Here is an official video from playstation describing how the move.me SDK works. This video made me very excited to say the least. I have been afraid to purchase the move and eye with out full confirmation that it has the abilities I am looking for. Also to download the move.me SDK is $100 which is a large sum of money to a student. This cost is not including the PS move starter pack. after following instructions from the PS site I logged onto the Playstation Network to view the move.me application. After an hour of searching I began to panic, realizing that Sony may have released this in the US only (Typical). I discovered from the European Playstation site that it was only released on the 12th of February this year. So at least it should be available to me. Alas I cannot find the download anywhere. There are massive discussions online about this. I’m shocked that a company as large as Sony would announce a release date with no information regarding the failure to follow through with this. Here is the link to the Irish PS site with the release date, all information including the manual. I have emailed the support team for information regarding the release date. I will post what information they give me. This has pushed me to look for solutions in other technologies. I initially had chosen the xBox Kinect as the tracking camera system. The Kinect doesn’t have the competency to track a person in 3D space as well as the PS move and this is why I changed my mind in the first place. I have found a project that someone has managed to move in 3d space using XNA and the Kinect SDK. If I do not get a reply from Sony soon I will be changing to the Kinect. Unfortunately I do not have the luxury of time. Also Unity has an easier integration for the Kinect over the Move.   Scridb filter

Getting Organized

On Wednesday I met my supervisor who advised me to start managing my research content. By doing this early on I will be able to access information I have collected fast and efficiently. To tackle this I have set up a Delicious account. Here I can bookmark links I have found that are relevant and organize them into stacks. My account can be viewed here. I also have began writing up the thesis. I have labeled all sections that are required and for now I will put information that I think will fit into the section and its reference to keep me on track so I’m not searching for information that I have found months prior. I have been researching the possibility of integrating the move.me SDK with Unity. I have found a number of documentation that supports it such as this wiki for example. Now what worries me is the fact there is no native plugin for Unity. I created an account with the Unity Answers Community and I have been inquiring about this subject. I have found a plugin for the Move called uniMove but it is only available for mac. I have emailed the author of the wiki for further information. Scridb filter

In a perfect world

A First Look at a Telepresence System with Room-Sized Real-Time 3D Capture and Life-Sized Tracked Display Wall” by Maimone and Fuchs, ICAT 2011. 10 Kinect cameras were used for capture and 1 for tracking. Display is on two 65″ LCD panels. This system is a similar idea to my thesis idea. It basically pulls in the image that the kinect sees into a window like LCD panel. The person looking at the panel almost gets the sense that the rooms is right next to them, especially with the clever tracking system that changes the perspective of the room. Seeing the level of resources and difficulty involved in recreating this effect to suit may change the functionality of my project to a certain degree. I may explore creating a 3D environment where the users can customize their surroundings. Please View the Video Below.   Scridb filter
