Contemporary Art In the public Realm
The module enabled us to look at various methodologies that aid in the creation of site-specific or public forms of art installations. Projects we were given allowed us to look at design solutions for both indoor and outdoor sites. Guest lecturer Aoife Cox also lectured us on the how to negotiate the business world and its possibilities in regards to our discipline and how to apply for funding for future projects we wish to undertake. Deliverables this semester were in the form of 2 projects and a funding essay.
Outdoor Project – Bit the 8Bit Bin
The brief for this project was to build a bin that enticed people to place their rubbish in bins around the campus while encompassing the fun theory. Here is our solution to this.
The 8 bit bin was designed for location on the The Living Bridge on the UL campus. It was designed to encompasses the fun theory, with the idea of gaming as our key concept. An LED panel accompanies the bin that reacts when interacted with. When the bin is used it sets in motion a random pattern of sound and lighting, echoing back to the days of 8bit gaming. We hope to encourage more frequent bin use with the interactive elements of the bin as well as providing an amusing experience.
Indoor Project – Side By Side
The Hunt Museum is about juxtaposing different objects from different eras together. We want to enhance the current exhibition pieces by placing common everyday objects beside them. We want to play on the idea that everyday objects have a hidden history to them, just like the objects from the past. The objects we take for granted today will become historical artifacts of the future. In this way, we want to play on peoples perception of everyday things.
We will be selecting specific display cases and placing a carefully chosen object in them. This object will be related to the other artifacts in the case but will contrast with them by being from a modern context. For example we could place a modern nail next to Bronze age artifacts to enhance their historic value while revealing the hidden history of the nail. A small piece will be written about each modern object, like the current displays, to bring them to life. These pieces will be placed inconspicuously around the museum to play on the idea of invisibility.
